In this seminar we discuss justice and beneficence near and far, as formulated in views of how benefits and burdens should be distributed within the borders of a just society, and as further brought to bear concerning sharing and stewardship to benefit and prevent harm to peoples and generations distant from us in space and time.
This course covers applied advanced regression analysis. Its focus is on relaxing classical assumptions in regression analysis to better match what epidemiological data really looks like. Specifically, the course will cover nonlinear exposure-response relationships and repeated measure designs, including non-parametric and semi-parametric smoothing techniques, generalized additive models, quantile regression, and time series models.
This course explores the varied roles that international lawyers and international institutions have played in shaping responses to climate change, the competing legal projects and strategies that they have developed to do so, and the shifting geopolitical contexts in which this work is taking place.
How do individual pursuits of happiness, self-esteem, positive emotions, and meaning in life shape attitudes toward social issues? What personal well-being strategies benefit the greater good of society, and which may hinder societal progress? Is ignorance bliss? In this course, we will delve into psychological research at the intersection of positive psychology and social justice to explore these questions across prominent socio-political issues including climate activism, gender equality, and racial justice.
Fundamental concepts and formalisms of conservation of energy and increase of entropy as applied to natural and engineered environmental and biological systems.
This class will cover basic principles of high performance building design, construction and operation, and impacts on indoor environmental quality, including chemical exposures, light, noise and thermal comfort. One class each week will be dedicated to lectures on these topics, with case studies and experiences from building practitioners that have successfully incorporated sustainability features in historic and contemporary structures.

Climate change has evolved over the past four decades into one of the most pressing challenges to the sustainable development of human societies. This course takes a realistic look at the effects of climate change and of climate change policies, at local, national, and international levels.
Debates about the significance of the Earth are increasingly central to the humanities, as scholars wrestle with the impact of climate change in our work. Informed by these debates, this course explores imaginaries of Place, World, Planet at the intersections of Christian thought, colonialism, and geopolitics.
This course was developed because the practice of medicine and public health in this century will require an understanding of the relationship between human health and the global environment.
