Mobility, Power, and Politics

Africa’s Lake Chad is shrinking because of climate change and growing resource demands. As it shrinks, populations in surrounding Cameroon, Niger, Chad, and Nigeria that rely on the lake for their livelihoods are experiencing new risks. Professor Daniel Agbiboa’s research on conflicts arising from these changes in the Lake Chad Basin inspired the interdisciplinary course, “Mobility, Power, and Politics." In this course, students consider the interconnected social, political, psychological, and structural changes taking place and their relationship to climate change.

Building Our Resilient Future: Education Driving Hope, Innovation, and Action

Join us as we highlight an action-oriented agenda for the education sector — with innovation and engagement as drivers for climate resilience. In two morning-panel conversations in Askwith Hall, we'll show how schools, leaders, and communities are making an impact in mitigating climate change, creating collaborative learning opportunities, and advancing equity in community approaches. Then, in an informal and energetic afternoon session we're calling the Solutions Showcase, we'll gather in Gutman Library to explore ways to accelerate progress and to act with hope and urgency. And we'll ask participants to share stories of where they are finding momentum now.

Climate Policy in Action: A Conversation with Nat Keohane

On May 10, 2023, Professor Henry Lee, Senior Lecturer at Harvard Kennedy School and Director of the Belfer Center’s Environment and Natural Resources Program (ENRP), hosted a conversation with Harvard alum Nat Keohane (PhD 2001), President of the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions and an Obama White House veteran, about putting climate policy in action to get on track for net-zero emissions by 2050. The event, held in the JFK Jr. Forum, was part of Harvard Climate Action Week, and was co-sponsored by ENRP, the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government, the Harvard Alumni for Climate and the Environment, and the Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability.

Next in Food Sustainability and Climate Change | Niki Rust

What does climate change mean for our food systems? How do our food production and consumption habits contribute to the climate crisis? The four speakers in this year’s program explore the complex interplay of food and climate change, challenging and illuminating our unsustainable relationships with meat and water, soil and sea. The presentations adopt both regional and international perspectives—from the depletion of fish stocks in the United States to crop failures in rural communities in the Global South—while highlighting mitigation and adaptation strategies in these areas.

Reforming US Energy Infrastructure Siting to Drive Low-Carbon Electricity |Harvard Climate Symposium

Electric vehicles. Off-shore wind. Solar farms. Low-carbon steel. These and other technological changes are driving a revolution in energy in the United States, and at the center of this revolution is electricity. Whether it is getting gasoline out of our vehicles or reducing the carbon footprint of materials used in manufacturing, the United States is increasing rapidly its demand for electricity. Meeting that demand requires substantial increases in and improvements in the electric grid and the markets for power. How do we meet that demand efficiently and equitably? How do we avoid catastrophic failures in electricity and keep energy affordable? How do we minimize the environmental impact and engage with communities to ensure that the benefits we will all enjoy do not come at enormous costs to a few? Watch this conversation with the nation’s lead experts on how we make a low-carbon electric grid.

The Legislative and Policy Outlook for Climate in the Next Few Years | Harvard Climate Symposium

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act put in place a suite of measures to subsidize low-carbon electricity, electric vehicles, and U.S. manufacturing of products for the energy transition. In 2022, the SEC proposed requiring corporate disclosure of climate-related risks. In April 2023, the EPA proposed new emissions standards that would drive EV penetration to 67% of new vehicles by 2032. These and other recent legislative and regulatory actions culminate in a line of policy efforts over the past decade or more. So, what are the next steps for national-level climate policy? This session explored priorities, challenges, and prospects for climate policy in Washington D.C. over the next few years.
