Methane Initiative faculty affiliate co-authors major report on Arctic methane

John Holdren, Teresa and John Heinz Research Professor of Environmental Policy at Harvard Kennedy School and a faculty affiliate of the Harvard Methane Initiative, has co-authored a major report on Arctic methane: Pan-Arctic Methane: Current Monitoring Capabilities, Approaches for Improvement, and Implications for Global Mitigation Targets.

The report was released by the Wilson Center’s Polar Institute in October 2024 and is available here. It synthesizes recent research on Arctic emissions of methane from thawing permafrost – research primarily based in the Permafrost Pathways project at Woodwell Climate Research Center and in Sandia National Laboratories. The Permafrost Pathways project is in turn a collaboration between the Arctic Initiative at Harvard Kennedy School, Co-Chaired by Holdren, and the Alaska Institute for Justice.

The Harvard Methane Initiative is a research cluster supported by the Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability at Harvard University.
