People and the Planet is a one-semester course with lecture, discussion, and engagement components primarily for second- and third-year Harvard College students seeking to understand the social side of climate change. Understanding the social side of climate change means shifting our attention from particles to people. We address such questions as: What is it about modern social life that has caused climate change? Why have societies responded so slowly to the climate crisis? What do social movements for environmental justice and climate justice contribute to climate mitigation and adaptation? How can people use social processes and organizations to adapt to life on a changing planet?

An Introduction to Planetary Health

This course is geared toward graduate students from all schools, but open to passionate undergraduates interested in exploring the implications of global environmental change on nutrition, infectious disease, mental health, and other domains of wellbeing. Throughout the course of the semester, students will engage in diverse materials from many types of examples of planetary health research, from nutrition and mental health, to infectious and non-communicable diseases.

Place, World, Planet

Debates about the significance of the Earth are increasingly central to the humanities, as scholars wrestle with the impact of climate change in our work. Informed by these debates, this course explores imaginaries of Place, World, Planet at the intersections of Christian thought, colonialism, and geopolitics. It addresses questions such as: How has Christian theology and colonialism shaped these ideas? How should we approach their symbolic and religious dimensions? What points of view and modes of knowledge do they reflect? What desired or imagined world orders do they or should they convey? The class explores these questions by examining a wide range of materials, including geopolitical, theological, and geographical treatises, visual art, maps and globes, as well as relevant theoretical texts. It provides resources for students interested in current debates in environmentalism as well as for those seeking to understand religious dimensions of colonial imaginaries in the Americas.
