Research Brief: Satellite Monitoring of Annual U.S. Landfill Methane Emissions
The Harvard Initiative on Reducing Global Methane Emissions, supported by the Salata Institute, has released a Research Brief titled “Satellite Monitoring of Annual U.S. Landfill Methane Emissions and Trends.” The underlying study uses satellite observations of atmospheric methane concentrations to estimate methane emissions from four large landfills in the southeastern United States over the period 2019–2023. The lead author is Nicholas Balasus, a Harvard doctoral student in atmospheric chemistry and physics. Daniel Jacob, Vasco McCoy Family Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry and Environmental Engineering, is Balasus’ advisor and a co-author. Other co-authors who are affiliates of the Harvard Methane Initiative are Carrie Jenks, Executive Director, Environmental and Energy Law Program, Harvard Law School; Daniel Varon, Research Associate in the Jacob Group; and Xiaolin Wang, Postdoctoral Fellow in the Jacob Group. Several doctoral alumni of the Group are also co-authors.
