Warzone Earth: Environmental Histories of War

Description

War is an environmental event. This course draws on historical archives and rich troves of narrative, memoir, reportage, and even analysis of physical objects and landscapes to help you re-think the meanings of warfare. Some weeks, we will examine specific conflicts in micro-historical detail; other times we will step back to explore the implications of warfare to climate change and other global dynamics. Throughout, we will be mindful of the reality that history is always a more-than-human affair: animals, plants, bacteria, and even elements like carbon and nitrogen shape historical dynamics. In turn, human experience is subject to non-human forces. Primarily for Undergraduate Students.
