The environmentalist, thought leader, and vice chairman of Roche Holding André Hoffmann has joined the Advisory Board of the Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability at Harvard University.

Hoffmann is recognized worldwide for his commitment to biodiversity and his pioneering efforts to embed environmental considerations into corporate strategies. His rare combination of business acumen and demonstrated environmental stewardship has made Hoffmann a leading figure in the global climate and conservation movement.

A former vice-president of WWF International and president of the MAVA Foundation, he is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the World Economic Forum and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Hoffmann Institute at INSEAD. Hoffmann is the co-author of The New Nature of Business: The Path to Prosperity and Sustainability (Wiley, 2024).

“Harvard’s commitment to pioneering research, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and bold climate action resonates deeply,” Hoffmann said. “My experience has shown me that the private sector, when guided by purpose as well as profit, can drive transformative solutions at scale. By integrating these principles into education, we can empower Harvard to be a model for how universities and businesses can create lasting positive impacts for people and the planet.”

At the Salata Institute, Hoffmann will help shape strategic priorities, expand global partnerships, and inspire action.

“We are thrilled to welcome André to our Advisory Board,” said Jim Stock, Director of the Salata Institute and Harvard’s Vice Provost for Climate and Sustainability. “His unparalleled leadership in sustainability and conservation, combined with his commitment to innovative, nature-based solutions, will help guide the Institute as we confront the twin challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss.”

The Salata Institute brings together researchers, practitioners, and students to develop and promote durable, effective, and equitable solutions to climate change. The institute serves as a fulcrum for collaboration across Harvard’s many areas of expertise, pursuing practical, real-world solutions that address all aspects of the climate crisis.
