Topics include efficient data movement and computation, AI for grid intelligence, and ultra-low-power AI systems like TinyML. The session showcased how energy-aware computing can become a foundation for scalable, systems-level solutions to the climate crisis.

Electric vehicles. Off-shore wind. Solar farms. Low-carbon steel. These and other technological changes are driving a revolution in energy in the United States, and at the center of this revolution is electricity. Whether it is getting gasoline out of our vehicles or reducing the carbon footprint of materials used in manufacturing, the United States is increasing rapidly its demand for electricity. Meeting that demand requires substantial increases in and improvements in the electric grid and the markets for power. How do we meet that demand efficiently and equitably? How do we avoid catastrophic failures in electricity and keep energy affordable? How do we minimize the environmental impact and engage with communities to ensure that the benefits we will all enjoy do not come at enormous costs to a few? Watch this conversation with the nation’s lead experts on how we make a low-carbon electric grid.

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act put in place a suite of measures to subsidize low-carbon electricity, electric vehicles, and U.S. manufacturing of products for the energy transition. In 2022, the SEC proposed requiring corporate disclosure of climate-related risks. In April 2023, the EPA proposed new emissions standards that would drive EV penetration to 67% of new vehicles by 2032. These and other recent legislative and regulatory actions culminate in a line of policy efforts over the past decade or more. So, what are the next steps for national-level climate policy? This session explored priorities, challenges, and prospects for climate policy in Washington D.C. over the next few years.
