Rethinking Progress: Growth and Ecology within Planetary Limits

Wednesday, Mar 25, 2026, 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm
Harvard Kennedy School, WEX-436
79 John F. Kennedy St.
Cambridge
GDP growth is often taken as the default path to prosperity. Can growth be achieved in tandem with climate goals? What do we miss when we only use growth targets to guide policymaking? This discussion will examine the relationship between prosperity and ecological boundaries, asking whether “green growth” can deliver, what “de-growth” approaches get right (and wrong), and how law and institutions shape what is feasible.

Join the Rethinking Progress initiative for a wide ranging conversation with Professor Rebecca Henderson (Harvard Business School) and Professor Lucie White (Harvard Law School) on the limits of economic growth. Discussion moderated by HKS Professor Eliana La Ferrara.
