Topics in Renewable Energy and Transmission Development Reading Group: Data Centers, Electricity Demand, and Who Pays?
Tuesday, Oct 20, 2026, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Nye A (Taubman 520), 79 JFK St, Cambridge, MA
During October 2026, Dr. Dan Schrag, Co-Director of the Belfer Center's Science, Technology and Public Policy Program, and clean energy entrepreneur Michael Skelly will host four discussions on carbon-free energy and the U.S. electric grid. The reading list introduces four practical debates shaping renewable energy development. The selections favor journalistic essays, policy explainers, and case studies written for highly educated readers who do not need a strong foundation in electricity policy.
Session Two: Data Centers, Electricity Demand, and Who Pays?
Discussion Focus: How much electricity will AI require? Should data centers pay for grid upgrades? Should they be grid-connected or self-powered?
This reading group is open to all Harvard University ID holders.
