Zhu Liu
Professor Zhu Liu is a Tenured Professor and Principal Investigator at the Department of Earth System Science, Tsinghua University. Dr. Liu holds a Ph.D. from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and has conducted postdoctoral research at Harvard University and California Institute of Technology. His research provides the near-real time assessments of the human impacts on the earth system, particularly the greenhouse gas budget. Dr. Liu is the co-founder of Carbon Monitor which is an international initiative that provides for the first time regularly updated, science-based estimates of daily CO2 emissions. During his time as a Salata Institute Fellow, Dr. Liu will be working on the global methane emission estimates that aims to enhance the tracking and analysis of global methane emissions using advanced satellite observations and real-time emission modeling. This project is essential for improving Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) processes and will contribute significantly to global climate change mitigation efforts by offering precise, real-time insights into methane emissions, thereby informing and enhancing international climate policy and cooperation.
The Salata Institute
The Salata Institute supports interdisciplinary research that leads to real-world action, including high-risk/high-reward projects by researchers already working in the climate area and new endeavors that make it easier for Harvard scholars, who have not worked on climate problems, to do so. Faculty interested in the Climate Research Clusters program should note an upcoming deadline for concepts on April 1, 2024.
