Harvard Methane Initiative conducts panel, engages in dialogue, at London Climate Action Week
The Harvard Initiative on Reducing Global Methane Emissions partnered with RMI to conduct a panel event on June 25, 2025 at London Climate Action Week, titled “Frontiers in methane emissions abatement.” Panelists were:
- Daniel Jacob, Vasco McCoy Family Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry and Environmental Engineering at Harvard University
- Deborah Gordon, Senior Principal and Methane Expert, Oil and Gas Solutions Initiative, RMI
- J.D. (Bram) Maasakkers, Senior Scientist, SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research
- Robert Stavins, A.J. Meyer Professor of Energy and Economic Development and Director, Harvard Methane Initiative, Harvard University
Daniel Jacob’s and Deborah Gordon’s presentation are linked below – as is an extended version of Robert Stavins’ presentation, which outlined the scope of the Harvard Methane Initiative. Gordon focused on estimating emissions intensities from equivalent barrels of oil, using RMI’s recently developed Oil Climate Index plus Gas (OCI+), in combination with satellite data. The title of Jacob’s presentation was “Quantifying methane emissions and their trends using satellites: from the global scale down to point sources.” Bram Maasakkers responded to and elaborated on the previous speakers’ comments, focusing primarily on estimation of emissions from point sources.
The Harvard Methane Initiative team also held bilateral discussions with representatives of the Climate & Clean Air Coalition, Spark Climate Solutions, the Oil and Gas Decarbonisation Charter, RMI’s waste-sector program, and bp. During these meetings, participants exchanged insights into approaches to measurement and abatement of methane emissions.
The Harvard Initiative on Reducing Global Methane Emissions – a Research Cluster of the Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability at Harvard University – seeks meaningful and sustained progress in global methane-emissions reductions through research and effective engagement with government policymakers – and with key stakeholders in business, nongovernmental organizations, and international institutions.
RMI transforms global energy systems through market-driven solutions to secure a prosperous, resilient, clean energy future for all. RMI works with businesses, policymakers, and communities to scale renewable energy solutions, reduce energy waste, and boost access to affordable clean energy.
