Profile
Naomi E. Pierce studies species interactions, particularly between insects and plants, and between ants and their many symbionts. Since 1991, she has been Hessel Professor of Biology in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard, and Curator of Lepidoptera in the Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ). Her lab uses behavioral, ecological and molecular methods to analyze the evolution of social behavior in bees and ants, pollination and herbivory between insects and plants, and sexual selection, signaling and sensory perception in butterflies and moths. As part of her work in the MCZ, she has been involved in surveying biodiversity on the savannas of Australia, South America and East Africa and in the forests of Southeast Asia, and she is actively involved in efforts to image and digitize the Entomology Collections of the MCZ. Pierce also collaborates with applied physicists to study how diverse nanostructures of insect cuticles can act as modulators of infrared light and provide sources of bioinnovation. Pierce is a member the National Academy of Sciences and has received honors such as a MacArthur Fellowship, the International Prize for Biology, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for the Study of Evolution.
