At moments of great challenge and possibility, the ability to act with speed, flexibility, and bold vision can make all the difference. Unrestricted gifts to the Salata Institute Fund provide leadership with the agility to pivot quickly when challenges arise, pilot innovative programs, and strengthen strengthen ongoing teaching, research, and student programs. This adaptable source of support ensures that Harvard’s work on climate remains responsive, resilient, and forward-looking.
New Faculty
For Harvard to reach its potential for true leadership in climate innovation, we
must grow Harvard’s community of faculty committed to the common mission of improving human welfare and planetary stewardship through research collaborations, teaching, and public engagement on climate and environmental sustainability. To help recruit and retain faculty who collectively have the depth and breadth of expertise required to address climate change, the Institute is establishing a new model for climate faculty appointments at Harvard University: Salata Institute Investigators.
Investigators will hold appointments at the Salata Institute and any Harvard School, empowering Harvard’s leadership to direct support to the most urgent climate faculty searches.
Research
The Salata Institute is Harvard’s central engine for high-impact climate research, supporting interdisciplinary work across nearly all Schools. Its Climate Research Clusters Program—Harvard’s most ambitious centrally funded climate effort—backs seven clusters with multi-year funding to generate concrete, scalable solutions, including in urban mobility and sustainable buildings. Since 2023, its Seed Grant Program has funded 45 early-stage projects tackling diverse, real-world climate challenges.
Support to the Climate Research Fund allows the Institute to unite leading experts and cutting edge technology in critical initiatives such as Decarbonizing the Grid and Biodiversity and Planetary Stewardship.
Student Support
The Salata Institute offers co-curricular and career advancement programs, and it holds community-building events that enrich students’ climate and sustainability education and better prepare them for leadership positions in the field. In academic year 2024-2025, more than 3,000 students across Harvard University benefitted from these programs, conducting fieldwork, pursuing on-campus projects, attending events, and working in internship positions. Gifts will fund these and other resources serving over 3,000 students who are interested in further engagement with climate and sustainability beyond the classroom.
