In December 2023, Harvard College student Tim Fargiano, ‘24, attended the first Salata Institute Climate and Sustainability Career Expo looking for an opportunity. On Friday, he was back – but this time on behalf of his new employer, IEc, a Cambridge-based environmental consultancy.  

“I came to this exact Career Fair last year and I talked to the people at IEc,” said Fargiano. “I really like the work they do. I really like the ethos of the company and its focus on doing good in the world… And now I’m here.” 

Fargiano’s career story was just one of many unfolding at the Expo.  

For four hours, business cards, resumés, and emails flew as hundreds of Harvard and MIT students and alumni set out on career paths in climate and sustainability. With 56 organizations attending — including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Avangrid, Ceres, Environmental Defense Fund, Lithios, and the Office of the Massachusetts Attorney General – the event attracted more employers than any other Harvard career fair for the second year in a row.  

For Leslie Hubbard, Assistant Director at the Salata Institute, this high degree of interest is encouraging, if not surprising. “Climate change is top of mind for so many Harvard students and alumni,” said Hubbard. “This community is seeking meaningful careers confronting this massive global issue – and leading employers are eager to connect with them.”  

The event was hosted in partnership with Harvard FAS Mignone Center for Career Success (undergraduate, MA/MS/ALM, and PhD)  in collaboration with the Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability, the Harvard School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, Harvard Business School, Harvard Divinity School, Harvard Graduate School of Design, Harvard Graduate School of Education, Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard Law School, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Harvard Medical School, and – for the first time this year – with MIT. 

The Expo builds on a slate of climate career development opportunities offered by the Salata Institute and its partners, including the Careers in Climate Action Speaker Series, the Harvard Climate Internship Program, the Salata Climate Policy Summer Internship Program, funding programs for student climate research and travel, and more.
